I agree with what is said. Teens can be a bit mindless when buying, but it's not only teens. Adults can be like this too.

To me, it is quite obiously stating that the market is taking over. In our world we are basicly run by money. The government needs money, and consumerism is a big way to easily get it. We get a new toy or phone, new modle comes out next year, most of us want that one, even if we dont need it.

The sources of the cartoon, flag and quote are all showing that consumerism has wormed itself into our lives as a day by day regular cycle. The implicit details in the flag is how the stars are replaced by major corporations, obviously implying that the land of America is now the land of corporations, therefore a land that has been consumed by consumerism. The implicit details in the cartoon is that advertisements had persuaded him to buy a new device, although his was perfectly fine. He was manipulated not only by the ads, but also by himself. The explicit detail is that although an average person wont want to admit it, we are ALL like this, because that's the way consumerism works. The implicit detail on the quote is completely straight forward, that consumerism has consumed us all whole. We have shaped our lives around consumerism, and it just crates more and more waste on our world. We have islands dedicated to carrying our waste.

There's three sources one that talks about how consumption is a way of life. The big picture of this is that we have turned this world into a consuming disaster. Two is the flag of the USA and major corporations. The stars are replaced with these major corporations to show that this is who we are; We are consumers this is what we consume. The third is about our craving to always have what's new and the latest trends. And how just after we get it we still want more, and always will.

1. The quote is just stating how we need to buy things to satisfy ourselves, that we need it so we we can satisfy our ego. Now the flag is saying that the stars have been replaced by all these companies and brands, that America is all about consumerism. The cartoon shows the truth what it's like when something "new" is released. At first it's so great then it just another thing you own.

3. I do agree with these messages. Buying things all the time it's just what we do now and the amount wee buy is ridiculous, I buy to many clothes all the timer but I love to that because I love the feeling of looking really good in a new outfit, but like everything else you buy it gets old so you go buy another new one

Great ideas Selah. Love the comment about "We are striving to be individuals in a group". Conflicting ideas hey? Marketing tends to expose this "group" mentality all the while selling their product as the ultimate individualize. Crazy how we are so unaware of how we are being duped all the time. Great response!

1) I think that this quote is from a older teens perspective on consumerism and also it could be from a young adult because it mentions rituals and we seek our spiritual satisfaction.

In the above sourses it states that buisnesses control the country and our minds/emotions. They are saying how buisnesses control us. The comic strip goes far enough to say that we are considering goods as even a form of happines.

Though everywhere consumerism is becoming a huge problem in society. No one gives a second thought about consuming if there is something to consume. We run our lives by consuming and when we buy, the companies expand to make more product for us to buy. Yes, it helps the economy but it's getting out of hand. We should all try and make a move to fix it.

First off the implicit and explicit details of each cartoon. when we look at the explicit details, we are able to see a mockery of the US flag where the stars are replaced with logos and the other one is a guy who buys things because he feels negatively but the implicit details tell a different story. when we analyze the US flag it is implying that the corporations in american hold more power than the government and the guy who is buying things is clever commentary on how we operate as a society mentioning the inevitable cycle of consuming we truly operate on.

GREAT RESPONSES! I especially love the comments about how this is a SOCIETAL problem not just a teenage problem. Also, one needs to consider WHERE teens are learning their spending behaviour. Definitely, part of their spending behaviour and trends are being learned from watching parents and adults. I applaud your responses Tim, Siara, Selah, Scot, Julia, Danielle, and Sarah. Great responses and a great start at writing source analysis papers!

I think that teens today buy way too much. They buy clothes, video games, phones, all of it has to be bought. I'm happy with my computer. My phone and xbox are just extras.

The sources of consumerism is basically saying that it's in our daily lives now and it affects everybody. The implicit details for the flag is that the stars got replaced with corporations. The explicit details for the flag is basically saying how much consumerism has really affected everybody in America. The implicit details for the cartoon is that an ad that the boy saw persuaded him into really wanting that new device. The explicit details for the cartoon is that ads in our everyday life affect everybody everywhere, even if we don't think it does, but it does.

The sources are a quote, picture, and a carton. They all show that consumerism is taking over our lives every day, and we happily can’t control ourselves.

We are drawn into whatever is new or better and ads make us want that, even though we probably don't want or need it. The way we use things and throw them out so quickly is amazing, and it's just a waste of our limited resources. Our planet won't be here forever and we need to at least try and save save it, instead of totally destroying it.

The source i chose was the image. The image depicts how the world (in the picture its specifically America but could be applied to everywhere) is controlled by the big businesses. Instead of the stars we see apple, google and many other company logos which represents there hold on our day to day life's. In my opinion this isn't far from the mark. i have heard the saying America is controlled by 5 bankers, this shows how money is what makes the world go round. Every time a new phone comes out everyone wants even tho there is nothing that new, it's because if you have these new things your "cooler" or "better" in a sense. The combined message is that all of us are programed to consume ,and no new iPhone or tv will satisfy our burning necessity for it.

Each of these three signs shows their own message, however they all tie in to one another and relate to a bigger topic. Each one presents a straightforward message while also hinting at deeper and more elusive meanings. The quote directly speaks about how consumption and purchasing has quickly moved into the mainstream. It is now considered an essential staple of life to many consumers. It tells us that consumption is linked to our ego and self-worth. The quote implies through implicit meaning that we need to constantly purchase new things in order to feel good about ourselves. The process of buying new items is no longer fueled off need, but instead, want.

In the picture of the american flag you can see that the flag dose not have the stars but instead it has a bunch of huge corporations that every on probably has more then one brand at home. when ever a company comes out with some thing new everyone wants it like win a new iPhone comes out every one wants it even though they have the one that came out not even a year ago.

Its quite obvious that money is actually controlling our country and our word, its scary when you think about. We are so reliant on the money its insane. Like the picture of the American flag instead of the stars its the big companies that basically control America in general. The cartoon also describes our society very well, for example Apple comes out with a new phone (everybody buys it) then the next year the phone before is to old then the cycle continues. Even though its silly that our society continues to buy new products every time they come out, personally i shouldn't say anything because i'm always tempted to buy as soon as it comes out. For example a new game console our new hockey stick when the one i have is good enough.

The message is clearly stating that our economy is being taken over by the need to "Consume" we know that we dont need the thing we are about to buy, but the demand is so great that we buy it anyway, only later realizing that we made a mistake and the fun only lasted a few days. yet we still dont learn, all the advertising and the way we were and our children were brought up , we are surrounded by the need to consume, the need to spend, and own the newest model of the iphone. not realizing what someone had to go through to make it. just for you to throw it away in the future. our economy needs to change, our generation needs to change it

Consumerism is taking over our lives. We go into a store only buying what you need. When really you don't actually need it. The demand Is really good, which means we buy it anyways. If we keep buying things that we don't really need it benefits the store and the people working there, not us. We then realize that it was a huge mistake because you've bought all of these things that are useless to you. We all need to learn that we don't need as many things as we think we need. We are all surrounded by the need to consume, we don't need to consume anymore. Things need to change and us people need to change it, no one else will except us

in the picture of the american flag the 50 stars are replaced with 50 products that consumers can't live without, it is products like google, walmart, apple, and nike, all of which we use in our everyday life. Everybody uses google every time they need to look something up, walmart is where majority of people shop, apple had products that no other industry has, nike and adidas is the most famous athletic industry.

People waste their money on items that they think is better than the last, and they soon stop using it mainly because they didn't ask themselves "are we going to use it as much?".

The American flag has no stars but has tyrant like corporations that brain wash people into thinking that they need their products to make them self's happy, this is shown in the comic that is about a guy who thinks he wants the "new phone" and after he gets it he enjoys it but then realizes he doesn't really need it and becomes sad and has big charges on his credit card. This also relates to the quote that talks about that these big corporations are trying to make it a way of life and basically forcing us to need and want their products to make ourselves "happy".

People are always spending money on the "newest coolest thing" probably not even needing it but wanting it because maybe everyone else has is and they wanna be cool and fit in with everyone else and then the next biggest thing is coming out and the process starts again.

We usually buy stuff that we don't need when we go shopping. It's like hey I like this top I'm going to buy it without caring how much it is or if I really need it or not. I do this a lot when I go to the mall. Also a lot of teenagers these days want the latest and greatest things from electronics to clothes or even sporting goods. Also the idea of us buying things if we need it or not makes us happy to consume.
